More on our vision and what we would like to accomplish

The vision of African Community Kalamazoo (ACF) is to build a thriving, self-sustaining community where African and other refugee families are fully integrated into the social, economic, and cultural life of Kalamazoo. Rather than limiting support to short-term aid like food or clothing, ACF envisions long-term transformation through empowerment, education, and opportunity. The organization believes that when refugees are supported holistically—with access to housing, legal services, language training, and faith-based community—they can become contributors, leaders, and change-makers in their new environment. ACF’s approach is rooted in dignity, cultural respect, and the belief that every person deserves the chance to rebuild their life with hope and purpose.

A key part of ACF’s future vision includes the creation of refugee-led businesses and job opportunities tailored to the unique needs and strengths of the refugee population. These include plans to open a culturally significant African-owned restaurant, a barber shop, and small social enterprises such as tailoring or farming ventures. Through these businesses, ACF aims to generate at least 55 jobs specifically for refugees who often face barriers in traditional employment systems due to language, trauma, or lack of formal documentation. These initiatives are not just economic—they’re a statement of empowerment, self-worth, and cultural pride, allowing refugee families to support themselves while enriching the broader Kalamazoo community.

ACF also plans to establish a permanent African Community Empowerment Hub, a centralized facility that will serve as a home base for ESL classes, vocational training, community events, and wraparound support. This hub will act as a refuge and resource center where families can access legal help, medical interpretation, and faith-based guidance in a culturally welcoming environment. In addition, ACF seeks to address the pressing need for affordable housing for refugee families by collaborating with developers, churches, and city leaders to renovate or build living spaces that are safe, accessible, and family-friendly. Through these bold, people-centered initiatives, ACF is building a model of refugee support that goes beyond survival—it lays the foundation for long-term healing, independence, and intergenerational success..
