Our big garden 2025
At African Community Kalamazoo, our community garden continues to grow as a source of health, culture, and connection. Families, elders, and children all work together to plant, water, and care for the crops, making the garden a true reflection of unity. Beyond providing fresh vegetables, the garden is a place where traditions are shared and new friendships are formed. Each season, the effort of many hands ensures that the harvest is not only abundant but also meaningful. This shared work demonstrates the strength of our community and our commitment to caring for one another.
Leadership also plays a key role in the garden’s success. Joshua Kibezi, founder of African Community Kalamazoo, often joins in alongside families to plant and tend the vegetables. His involvement shows that leadership is about serving together, and it encourages others to take part. Seeing a founder working shoulder to shoulder with community members is a powerful reminder that no task is too small when it comes to building a healthier, stronger future. This example strengthens the spirit of teamwork that keeps the garden thriving.
The harvest is always a highlight of the year. From elders who carry baskets to children who eagerly help pick vegetables, everyone takes part in celebrating the results of the work. Joshua Kibezi is among those who lend a hand, but the true joy comes from seeing the whole community gather to share in the harvest. It is a moment of gratitude and accomplishment, where the fruits of our labor are visible for all to see. These shared experiences remind us of the value of unity and cooperation.
Most importantly, the vegetables we grow are distributed for free to those in need. Families and leaders work together to make sure the harvest reaches as many people as possible, spreading both nourishment and hope. This practice of giving reflects the values of African Community Kalamazoo and reinforces our mission of serving others. The garden is not only about food — it is about generosity, culture, and community coming together. Each season, it continues to be a living example of what we can achieve when we grow and give as one.
